IDEO Human Centered Design Strategy: Design Thinking Process

ideo human centered design

This handy worksheet can help you think through some key aspects of a social enterprise, service, or business. IDEO.org is a nonprofit design organization that launched out of IDEO in 2011 with a mission to improve the lives of poor and vulnerable communities through design. The Field Guide was funded by more than 1300 backers in a Kickstarter campaign that reaching nearly three times its initial goal. IDEO.org received an amazing outpouring of support and strengthened its deeply held belief that human-centered design can push the social sector forward.

From New Venture to Population-Level Impact

It’s fair to say that we were in the right place at the right time. When we looked back over our shoulder, we discovered that there was a revolutionary movement behind us. In addition, it is necessary to continue iterating, testing, and integrating user comments until you have perfected the proposed solution. With each iteration, you will learn something new and we will get closer to the product desired by the customer.

And in the Implementation Phase you’ll bring your solution to life, and eventually, to market. And you’ll know that your solution will be a success because you’ve kept the very people you’re looking to serve at the heart of the process. It’s a process that starts with the people you’re designing with and ends with new solutions that are purpose-built to suit their needs. Human-centered design is about cultivating deep empathy with the people you’re designing with; generating ideas; building a bunch of prototypes; sharing what you’ve made together; and eventually, putting your innovative new solution out in the world. This free, 9-week course is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the concepts beyond human-centered design – and how to use it to face your own challenges to improve our world.

The Ten Faces of Innovation

Human-centered design is a creative approach to problem solving and the backbone of our work at IDEO.org. It’s a process that starts with the people you’re designing for and ends with new solutions that are tailor made to suit their needs. In the Inspiration Phase you’ll learn directly from the people you’re designing for as you immerse yourself in their lives and come to deeply understand their needs. In the Ideation Phase you’ll make sense of what you learned, identify opportunities for design, and prototype possible solutions.

AI & Ethics: Collaborative Activities for Designers

Throughout, you’ll follow a 4-step process to create innovative solutions to real-world challenges, conduct user interviews, and bring ideas to life through rapid prototyping. The online course will include 5 reading guides, 5 workshop guides, and 7 videos featuring IDEO creators and other innovation and design thinking mentors. Today, we are diversifying our teams with designers who come from a range of lived experiences and backgrounds, and IDEO’s portfolio features more examples of co-design than ever before.

ideo human centered design

IDEO is one of the most innovative and award-winning design firms in the world. They’re like the secret weapon of innovation for companies like Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Pepsi, and Samsung, in large part, due to their focus on human centered design. Promote Design Thinking as a core competency to support all organizations to become more effective at adding value through a human centered design approach to problem solving. Designing for Public Services is a toolkit for policymakers and those who deliver public services, developed in collaboration with Nesta, a U.K. Innovation charity, and Design for Europe, a design and innovation program co-funded by the European Commission. For human-centered designers, there is nothing more valuable than discovering what matters to people—what triggers frustration and what provides ease, what brings grief and what sparks joy.

While learning and doing design thinking, teachers build their creative muscles and connect to diverse partner organizations that are committed to bringing their solutions to life. We’ve learned a lot over the years, and we’d like to share our insights. We’ve seen design thinking transform lives and organizations, and on occasion we’ve seen it fall short when approached superficially, or without a solid foundation of study. Design thinking takes practice; and as a community of designers, entrepreneurs, engineers, teachers, researchers, and more, we’ve followed the journey to mastery, and developed maps that can guide others.

IDEO's human centered design process

Learning how the conservation of a specific ecosystem is a challenge of designing for the people who depend on it. It’s moving from a nascent practice to an established one, and with that comes interest and critique. As a leading and committed practitioner of design thinking, IDEO has a stake in this conversation—and a responsibility to contextualize its value in the present moment and, importantly, in the future. IDEO did not invent design thinking, but we have become known for practicing it and applying it to solving problems small and large.

The Field Guide is the latest in IDEO.org’s suite of teaching tools and a step forward in sharing the practice and promise of human-centered design with the social sector. In April 2015, IDEO.org launched an exciting new evolution of the HCD Toolkit the Field Guide to Human-Centered Design. This is the central philosophy that human centered design revolves around. Whether you’re designing physical or digital solutions, the process is the same, and it consists of six phases, which we'll outline next.

In the handover phase, participants will begin to realize solutions through rapid revenue and cost modeling, capacity assessment, and implementation planning. In the creation phase, participants will work together in a workshop format to understand what they heard from the end-user in the previous step. The problem with adult toothbrushes was that they were hard for kids to hold. Since they were so small, they just flopped around in the kids’ hands and were difficult to use. Once you get feedback from your users, use that information to fuel the changes to your design.

Sephora reinvents the in-store experience for digital-first shoppers, blending digital convenience with concierge in-store service. Looking to solve a problem, grow your team’s capabilities, or build new strategy? Once the solution is at a point where it is ready to use, it is time to move on to the next step.

So the IDEO team started by putting themselves in the position of the patient. They had one of their team members pretend to be a patient in the hospital, and they discovered something obvious, yet completely overlooked. IDEO went back to their office to brainstorm potential solutions, and they came up with a device that had a thumb scroll so nurses could do everything with one hand. When patients were going into the operation, they were really nervous and afraid. So the first thing that almost every nurse did was hold the patient’s hand to comfort them—an obvious human element their client hadn’t noticed.

At IDEO, we believe that applying design thinking with integrity means continuing to deepen and refine—to be lifelong learners and practitioners at the same time. IDEO executes this exercise by observing the user and putting itself in their shoes. They know if researchers can feel the same what people feel, how their experience is really like, they can use that information to drive their design solutions. And this process has made them one of America’s most influential and award-winning design firms.

What makes Plese’s portfolio most memorable is her employment of textured geographic shapes to serve as a visual design motif, a nod to the principles of graphic design. Whether you have a feel for typography or are talented with color, show off the way that you see the world in your graphic design portfolio. Think about every detail, and then execute to the best of your ability. For example, a graphic designer once sent his portfolio to a creative director friend of mine.

Equipped with an about page, mission statement, digital resume, projects page, and contact information, this portfolio is a great example of a multi-page portfolio website done right. It’s immediately obvious that David is an amazing designer, and scrolling through his projects solidifies this hunch.

The double strokes on the top right beside the conventional header components reveal elements of both the header and the footer against a white backdrop. I love how this portfolio site features brick-red CTA buttons that toggle as you hover the cursor over them. As with any tool, budget is a major factor when choosing a portfolio website. You don’t need to spend a fortune to make a professional and clean website, though. Extra widgets and e-commerce purchase functions are usually what run up the price on website builders. ‘What you see is what you get’ interfaces let you manipulate objects and web design with zero coding knowledge.

A great portfolio page acts as an extension of your branding, personality, and skill. It’s also your chance to make a good first impression and introduce your talents. As a web designer, you'll need a unique and interesting portfolio page so potential customers can peruse your work. And if you do a great job, clients might want you to build their portfolio or website, too. And all designers have to do is create an account and they can get started crafting a portfolio that’ll blow potential clients away. If you have clients from different industries, include some work from each industry. Then, edit your portfolio based on the kind of client you’re showing your portfolio to. As you build personal brand content, take the time to make sure your marketing materials are cohesive and sleek. It takes eye-catching imagery and typographic finesse to create a portfolio that draws top clients like Apple, Benefit, and Levis. Each case study includes details like the team involved, project type, Ivette’s role, and success metrics. This online portfolio uses subtle yet clever visual appeals to show Ivette’s skill.

David Milan is a skilled illustrator, animator, graphic designer, and all-around visual entertainer. This webpage features organizations of great repute such as Entertainment Weekly and The Washington Post. The elements of design, coding, and content creation required to create one can be overwhelming, deterring many from building their own portfolio sites. Other portfolio websites require a little more coding knowledge because they pair click-and-drag elements with HTML and CSS coding languages. This gives you more direct control over the design and lets you break out of basic themes — but it also means you’ll need to spend more time learning the software.

This approach is an excellent way to add subtle hints of flair and vigor to your graphic design portfolio site. Lindsay Burke, a HubSpot Product Designer, emphasizes the importance of quality over quantity when it comes to curating a graphic design portfolio. She says, "I recommend selecting your strongest projects and making these the primary focus of your portfolio website." This graphic design portfolio website uses a range of type sizes and contrasts to emphasize the ideas it communicates. This makes it a great graphic design portfolio example for designers who want to show long-term or complex projects. Oporto Fooding House & Wine

oporto fooding house & wine

The Saturday-at-Disneyland-like crowds and long queues of people waiting to get pastries, sandwiches and snacks can be off-putting to the uninitiated, certainly. Because the second thing you notice at any Porto’s is how quickly the line moves. Porto’s desserts are as famous, if not more, than anything else on its menu.

Rosa Porto died Friday, leaving behind a husband of 64 years, children, grandchildren and legions of customers loyal to the business she created, Porto’s Bakery & Cafe. Porto’s adapted to its environs over the years — changing Los Angeles demographics and a dwindling Cuban population — and shifted its menu constantly according to evolving tastes. In doing so, the small bakery that began at Sunset and Silver Lake Boulevards in 1976 became the quintessential L.A. Restaurant — and an incredible story of American success. If that sounds a little dramatic, it speaks to the power of Porto’s, with six perpetually busy locations in the L.A.

Leading L.A. vegan restaurant goes un-vegan. ‘I knew the vitriol that would come my way’

To eat one is to truly grasp the concept of positive reinforcement in behavioral psychology. To eat one is to see the potential of what shepherd’s pie could have been. At Oporto Fooding House & Wine in the Fourth Ward, you can expect Portuguese food and crisp cocktails in a warm and airy environment. If you’re dining solo, grab a spot at the marble countertops shiny enough for an HGTV cameo, order some roasted chorizo and peppers, and sip on a sweet caipirinhas stuffed with lime. With some of the viennoiserie and other baked goods, I find myself in the position of having to walk back some of the praise I ladled on in my 2019 appreciation.

Portuguese Power Lunch

Please call restaurant directly for take-out or curbside options. Bosscat Kitchen & Libations in River Oaks serves Southern comfort food in a dining room that feels like the inside of a whiskey barrel. Our guide to the best Happy Hour food and drink specials around the city.

Is Eagle Rock’s new pâtisserie serving L.A.’s most sought-after croissants?

I never leaned on Porto’s much as an early-morning option, but I can now pronounce it to be one of my favorites in the city, especially given the increasing dearth of daytime eateries since the pandemic struck. Between 1965 and 1973, Freedom Flights brought hundreds of thousands of Cuban refugees to the shores of the United States. They relocated to California, where her husband, Raúl, had family. It didn’t take long for Cuban immigrants in the States to start asking Porto for her cakes. “In the airport when we arrived,” she said, she was approached by someone from home.

Porto’s has become its own language, to the extent that its baked and hot foods no longer just represent Cuba — they’ve come to represent Los Angeles. Roasted pork and ropa vieja come in both sandwich and entrée form. I would recommend the latter, as you get a side of rice and black beans as well as a few tender, gently caramelized maduros, or fried plantains. They’re developed, mature, tasting of onion, bell pepper and a hint of tomato. You’ll be forgiven for thinking this dish is a Jules Verne novel — there are depths to these beans. “In the beginning,” Porto said, “we made bread.” Porto and her husband (who worked the night shift at the now-defunct Van de Kamp’s bakery), opened their first bakery in a strip mall in Silver Lake with a bank loan.

oporto fooding house & wine

A standard butter croissant was a bit flatter than I remembered. That, a ham and cheese croissant and a chocolate twist pastry were more flaccid than flaky. My biggest surprise during recent Porto’s trips has been in the breakfast department.

A torta with chopped bits of well-done steak tastes like a good carne asada taco that wandered onto a French roll. But a chicken torta, overwhelmed by guacamole that spills out of the sides on first bite (I’m not sure I’ve ever complained before about getting too much guacamole on anything) doesn’t really move the needle. The guava cheese strudels, or Refugiados (“refugees”) are probably the next logical step in any visit to Porto’s, after the potato balls. Flaky pastry, as light and buttery as any viennoiserie in the city, shelters a mixture of tangy, soft cheese combined with the bright, tart fruit. It’s a Caribbean-meets-Continental-Europe mashup that makes Girl Talk look like a rank amateur. “I lived with an aunt who liked to do cakes and pastries,” Porto said in Spanish, recalling her early memories of food.

Saladas

A menu as vast as that at Porto’s — more than 100 bakery items, and dozens of sandwiches, soups and salads — would be worrisome at most places. To make an analogue, the pan-Asian bistro that serves Thai food and Chinese food and sushi never does much of it well. Whether it’s the flaky croissants or the cheesecake or the Cuban sandwiches, it’s all delicious, nearly without exception. Instead of narrowly specializing, Porto’s tries to be all things to all people — and, largely, it succeeds.

After the Cuban Revolution, “Everything changed,” she said. “When you requested to leave, they fired you from your job.” Families that asked to leave the country were marked as enemies of the state — they were called worms, or traitors to the revolution. People lost their jobs, possessions and some, like Porto’s brother, perished in work camps. “Because there were neighborhood committees.” These “committees” rooted out possible subversion — subversion like owning an illegal business.

They knew they’d have to sell more than the cakes Porto had been baking in Cuba. To build up day-to-day business and foot traffic, they started selling Mexican conchas, doughnuts — whatever people wanted. But the refugiados (guava and cheese pastries) and cheese rolls, with their tangy, creamy fillings, remain excellent, as does a spinach feta empanada. Other empanadas and meat pies are decent but unremarkable, and the tamales are topped by those at some Latin American bakeries around town. The first thing you’ll notice at any Porto’s, at nearly any time of day, is the chaos. Dining room packed, food runners dodging those lurking to nab the first empty table, and of course, the impossibly long line, 40 or 50 deep.

They are divine racquetball-sized orbs of fluffy mashed potato filled with a picadillo spiced meat mixture laced with onions, peppers and what tastes like just a hint of olive and cumin. The balls are coated in breadcrumbs and fried to a deep, tawny brown. The mild crunch of the exterior yields to the silky potato-y mass, only to reward further with tender meat and mild gravy.

You generally fare better with the cream-focused cakes and desserts, like the flaky Napoleon or tres leches cake, which feels like plunging into a kiddie pool of sweet milk and sopping wet sponge. Tangy mango and guava mousses, electric jolts of mouth-puckering tang and sweetness, also are worthy of a splurge. Carrot and Parisian chocolate cakes and a mixed berry muffin offer somewhat less to write home about. Other sandwiches, including a marginally spicy chicken milanesa, with a flat, crunchy fried cutlet and melted mozzarella, are also good, if not quite at the same level.

An egg, cheese and chorizo sandwich on a crusty white Cuban roll, with a fluffy-egged omelet dotted with spiced meat, is exactly what you want in a breakfast sandwich. Porto’s version of a breakfast burrito is pleasantly hearty, a tortilla-cloaked omelet stuffed with chunks of seasoned, shredded pork, black beans and guacamole. A punchy, persuasive salsa verde goes perfectly with the wrap and allows it to thread the needle and avoid the trap of being too heavy. Torrejas, or Cuban French toast, are over-the-top rich, fat slabs of eggy, fried toast. The guava syrup accompaniment offers a lighter touch than your standard maple syrup, but every bite feels luxuriant, like the chip crumbs from the bottom of the bag.

Why Porto's is still one of Southern California's favorite bakeries Los Angeles Times

Oporto Fooding House & Wine

Portuguese Power Lunch

On reopening day, community calls the revival of Cafe Tropical a ‘triumph’

Following her death, I wrote an effusive appreciation of Rosa Porto and the business she created. But I was curious recently about how Porto’s has sustained its menu, now slightly pared down three years into COVID, without its matriarch. It started with a French bread here, a chocolate mousse there, and experimenting with the formats of the cakes. The potato ball is as good a place as any to start when talking about Porto’s.

Madiera Bread Pudding

She lived with the aunt for several years after her father died at a young age. These memories, and recipes from her grandmother, would inspire her once she began her own business. It’s the reason Porto’s has continued to thrive, well into its fifth decade of existence — an extraordinary feat for any restaurant. And it ensures that you’ll keep seeing people trotting those boxes and bags through airports across the nation. I was fortunate to conduct one of Rosa Porto’s final interviews before she died in 2019 at age 89. She told me about her hometown of Manzanillo; her love of ajiaco, a rustic soup popular in Cuba; and inspiration gleaned from years living with an aunt who loved baking and her grandmother’s recipes.

Glass Repair & Installation Fullerton + Orange County

window glass design

While it can be tempting to go for the most visually stunning window glass designs, it’s essential to work within your budget. Basic clear glass is typically the most affordable option, but it might not be the best fit for your needs. Some designs can mimic the look of more expensive types of glass, such as frosted glass or stained glass. Another important factor to consider when choosing a glass window design for your home is soundproofing.

Windows for Bright, Natural Light

Using such glass for your home windows will also protect your furniture and cloth fabrics from fading away. Casement windows swing outward when they open rather than sliding up and down. Typically fitted with a hand-crank to open and close the window, these are excellent choices for areas where sliding the window open would otherwise be difficult, like kitchens.

Compared to standard window designs, they provide more expansive views and natural light as the sun moves across the sky. Bay windows can also create cozy alcoves, such as breakfast areas or reading nooks, and boost storage and floor space. The best window design ideas do more than let natural light and fresh air into your home. Depending on what you use, they can also serve as an architectural focal point and contribute to the overall style of your home. Learn about the most popular types of windows to see which is best suited for your space. Ultimately, the right window glass design for your home will depend on your specific needs and preferences.

The panes are aligned parallel to each other and glazed or sealed using putty, with space left in between each pane. The putty helps when placing the glass panes on the window frame and also helps hold the structure together. Stained glass is a window design idea that brings character and color to a neutral room. The tinted glass also allows light into a space without surrendering privacy. This home's classic Victorian detailing is most substantial in the foyer, where stained glass works beautifully with a grand staircase. Picture windows are a significant addition to any home where showcasing the exterior view is desired.

Once you’ve selected the right pivot window, engage a professional for installation.

Unique Window Glass Designs

Clear float glass is also widely used in automobiles, tabletops, mirrors, and windows. Watch as a featured decorative glass design carefully comes together from start to finish in this short video. If safety is an issue, such as in an area with high winds, tempered glass is the way to go. It is recommended that you contact your window installer to check local pricing.

Of course, working with glass doors like this is a much more specialized and technical process. But the glittery result can be well worth it if you want to set a glamorous scene (and live in one). In this transitional space designed by GRT Architects, the fluted glass partition separates the hallway from the staircase. The grooves add textural intrigue and privacy, obscuring the adjacent areas without completing obstructing them. If you have a standalone house, a flat that is close to the ground or live in a busy neighbourhood with kids playing around, laminated glass suits you best.

It’s worth taking the time to choose a reputable installer and high-quality window materials to get the most out of your investment. Clerestory windows are carefully designed to both let sunlight in and preserve privacy, making them ideal for personal spaces. They are generally placed high on the wall, which allows plenty of light to stream in while keeping your personal activities out of sight from the outside. Aluminum frames are durable, require minimal maintenance, and have a sleek modern appearance.

Given the variety of window glass designs available in the present times, you can pick any of your choices and add the right type of glass that protects you from all aspects. Choose a window glass that provides privacy, protects you from accidents and allows a lot of natural light to come in. Large glass windows are a fantastic way to infuse your home with natural light, create an illusion of more space, and enjoy unobstructed views of the outdoors. This article will explore various large glass window ideas, from floor-to-ceiling designs to bay windows, and discuss their benefits, installation considerations, and maintenance tips. Whether you’re renovating or building from scratch, you’ll find a wealth of information here to help you make the best decision for your home.

If you have a room that doesn’t get a lot of sunlight, you might want to consider a window glass design that allows for maximum light transmission. For example, clear glass is a popular option because it allows for maximum light transmission. However, keep in mind that clear glass may also allow for more heat gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter. One of the most important functions of window glass design for a home is to let in natural light. This can help to brighten up a room and make it feel more spacious and inviting. Whatever window designs best suit your needs, getting the most from your choices comes down to working with professionals who are passionate about every detail of your window design.

This type of window usually features a hinge on one side and a cranking mechanism that helps you easily swing the window open. Commonly seen above kitchen sinks, they're great for areas where it might be challenging to push the window open. When choosing multi-pane gable windows for vaulted rooms, there are several key factors to consider. Arched windows mimic the elegant contours found in Gothic architecture, enlivening the structure with a touch of historic charm. These can be a stand-alone feature or paired with finer details to heighten this aesthetic.

Adding operational windows or glass doors as part of the wall can aid ventilation and provide an access point to the garden. A window wall promises to flood your garden-facing living room with natural light, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoors. It’s an ideal way of turning the room into a tranquil retreat, offering panoramic views of the green expanse.

Prices and availability of products and services are subject to change without notice. In the ten years that we have been doing business in Southern California, we’ve provided glass service to thousands of homeowners. That’s because we handle every job with a level of skill and professionalism that can’t be beat.

Sliding doors and French doors need window design ideas that keep them operable and allow for easy in-and-out access to the home's outdoor space. For bedrooms, black-out shades or curtains help keep the room dark when extra sleep is needed or the early-morning sun is too intense. Coordinate window treatments with the decor in the room to add a high-end feel for the finishing touch to any room. Skylights and other high windows are great ways to add natural light to a room without sacrificing privacy and wall or storage space. Skylights can show off a ceiling's striking pitch, bring the outdoors in, and offer sky and treetop views. Additionally, if operable, high windows can provide a valuable source of ventilation in bathrooms or kitchens.
